Scattered throughout the country, the monasteries not only pro- claimed the Christian Faith, but influenced the building of towns and streets, schools, libraries and the advancement of culture. Over the centuries the monasteries and _ cloisters decisively stamped and molded the history of this country. Today, the greater part of their function has been lost, but they still stand in splendcr and magnifi- cence as reminders of the culture of past epochs. Of special interest to today’s visitors are, along with the uniqueness of the architec- ture, the countless treasures which are among the most valuable Austria has to of- fer. Before the gates of Vienna stands Klosterneuburg, founded in 1133 by the Babengergian Duke Leopold Ii], now Austria’s patron Saint. Within its walls can be found one of the most precious witnesses, to the ari of the Middle Ages, the vers- dun altar, consisting of 51 scenes from the Old and New testament. The monastery of Melk marks the entrance to one of Austria’s foveliest holiday landscapes, the Danube Valley of the Wachau. From 976 to 1106 this Benedictine monastery served as royal residence to the Babenbergs. Central Europe’s most cele- brated painters, sculptors and stuccoworkers con- tributed to the interior deco- tation. Design of the Baroque monastery of Gottweig at the far end of the Wachau was drawn up by imperial court architect’ Lukss von Hildebrandt. The monastery with its characteristic corner towers occupies the whole of the mountaintop and is visi- ble for miles.
