Fen * On Sunday June 11, a long-time resident of the Howe Sound area passed away in Lions Gate Hospital. To his relatives and friends, he was Alec William McPherson. To his comrades of the North Shore Lifeboat Society he was known as the Coastwatcher One. Working as a CB radio monitor for the Lifeboat Society he assisted many small boaters who had problems on the waters of Howe Sound. He also became a great help to the truckers that drive the Squamish Highway who knew how to call him on the CB emergency Channel! Nine. the last few years of his life, he selflessly answered radio distress calls at all hours of the day or night. From his house in Copper Cove, just outside Horseshoe Bay, he operated a sophisticated CB base station and was instrumental in set- ting up other base stations to help him monitor Channe! Nine. Often calling on the Lifeboat Society based in Fisherman's Cove, or the Coast Guard Rescue Control Center in Victoria, undoubtedly he saved some lives. Though he tried to maintain a low profile, in 1986 he was awarded the Alec McPherson Coastwatcher Award by West Vancouver Mayor Derek Humphries. A man of staunch and solid political values, Alec supported hi: close friend John Reynolds in two of his campaigns. He also served as chauf- feur for both John Reynolds and Joe Clark. Apparently Alec’s sense of humour made the campaign trails a little smoother. He gave of these services asking nothing in return. A man of dignity and dreams, he will be remembered as a big man with a big heart. Alec is survived by his loving wiie Pauline, two children, David and Kim, and two grandchildren, Kyle and Jennifer.
