36 - Sunday, March 7, 1999 ~ North Shore News Training better than fencing From page 34 important, it takes the bur- den of responsibility off the owner and places it on the tence, fiterally. The dog owner no longer has to be concerned with their dog’s actions or where- abouts. The dog is contained within the fence, creating an out-of-sight-out-of mind environment. Instead of fene- ing, how about ... training! the city should begin enforcing bylaws by warning and/or ticketing the few irresponsible owners with unruly dogs.” Boundary Bay in Delta is a wonderful example of dog people and non-dog people enjoying the same area. Owners at this park take complete responsibility for -their dog's actions and are respectful of other park users. When someone with or without a dog approaches, dog owners call their dog to their side or if needed place their dog temporarily on its leash. If owners want their dugs to play together they actually ask if it's OK first (what a novel idea). Next is the issue of hired dog walkers. Don’t get me wrong, I am an advocate of © hiring someone to come and everctse a dog when the owner can nor But as an obedience and bela toural trainer, | would like to see some sort of regulation /by- Jaw placed on the amount of dogs walked at one ume. | often see walkers with packs of ten or more dogs. Even I feel intimidated by a large pack of dogs running free with a woman in the middle screaming “Cookies, who wants cookies!” The pack behaviour creat- ed by this amosphere is des- tined for trouble (the behav- ioural reasons are subject for another article). F suggest a maximum of three dogs ata time (1m bound to get some grief over this). If good obedience trainers have small classes to keep things controlled, good dog walkers should do the same. Finally, the city should begin entorcing bylaws by warning and/or ticketing the few irresponsible owners with unruly dogs. An owner that makes little or no effort to control their dog can really spoil what should be a fun walk in a beautiful park. All it takes is one bad apple... Vouldn't it be great if the off-leash park was a success? Maybe it could even be a model for other municipali- ties considering this within their communities. This of course depends on you. ~ Something to consider. —— Joan Klucha is a certt- fied trainer and owner of Sierra K9 Training on the North Shore.
