Noise Induced Hearing Loss is a growing problem. It’s usually the result of repeated sound overstimulation; it’s cumulative over a lifetime and it’s not currently treatable. But it is preventable. “There are ways to reduce sound in your own home,” Taylor said. As well as the obvious, like turning down the TV and stereo, noise can be reduced by simple steps like putting foam pads under noisy appli- ances. Taylor also said parents should be aware of toys that make noise and control the amount of time a child spends plaving with them. In order to raise awareness of NIHL, the CHHA is pro- moting a poster campaign throughout the community. Look for them at Lions Gate Hospital, Capilano College and at various community centres. .
