By Katte Zimmerman News Reporter Oct. 26 volunteers were called out to Jocate and rescue a 53-year: old hiker stranded on Grouse Mountain. Bill Scott had strayed off the Grouse Grind trail. a popular ascent from the parking lot to the top of the mountain, and found himself in a ravine with darkness descending. Though he had no flashlight. Scott did have his cellular phone with him and was able to call for assistance. Searchers soon found him and helped him back to safety. Volunteers were called out again Oct. 29 for two searches. Seven overdue Porteau Camp hikers went missing in the area of the Lions in poor weather and snowy conditions. Six teenagers and their adult le. ‘cr had been hik- ing the. Howe Sound Crest Trail. They had planned to spend Friday and Saturday nights in the moun- tains, but white-out conditions made it difficult for them to find their way. Meanwhile, another call was received concerning one or possibly two overdue hikers in the Lynn Headwaters Park. The only clue the hikers had feft behind was a vehicle parked within the gates after 4:30 p.m. They hadn't registered at de park Kiosk, left a specific destination with friends or taken any survival pear with them, ‘The stranded pair were eventiial ly found at LES a.m. on the Upper Loop trail, about 2 ka morth of the gate. They were damp and chilled but not injured. While the two searches were being conducted, North Shore Search and Rescue also mobilized a Six-person team to assist in the search for a 79-year-old wonan fostin Squamish’s Duisy Lake area. The woman wandered away from her family on Sunday while mushroon picking near Squamish and wound up spending the night in the snow and cold. Kinuye Teramura was found around Black Tusk al 8:45 a.m. Monday and taken to hospital. Squamish RCMP said the woman was in good condition con- sidering the elements she had to endure: Teramura was wearing a rain shell jacket, sweat pants and oxford-style shoes when she went missing. Once again, North Shore Search and Rescue advises hikers and other outdoor activity enthusiasts to complete a trip itinerary form, leave it with a responsible person. and take with them the essentials for outdoor survival.
