By Layne Christensen Now Report Lawyer by day and stone carv- er by night, the 38-year-old leacis a dual existence, but it's an arrangement that suits him just fine. “1 steal time to do this,” he says of his passion. Instead of watching TV, most nights Malach can be found holed up in the tiny work- shop that adjoins his 70-year-old ¢ Upper Lonsdale home. Just six years into his craft, Maliach can boast of having works in seven galleries, including the Queensdale and Spirit gal- leries on the North Shore. One recent project took Mallach to Mount Currie where he led a stonecarving workshop at the Spirit Circle gallery. This led to one of his students, Oliver Bruyére, accepting a com- mission to sculpt a soapstone mask that Chief Peter Quaw of the Lheit‘lit’en. Nation presented to the Queen during her visit to Prince George for the opening of the University of Northern B.C.
