recycle solid waste has been

taken to heart by a number of

North Shore businesses.

In recognition of their efforts,
the Greater Vancouver Regianal
District (GVRD) cited the compa-
nies as role models for waste reduc-
tion and recycling in the business
community.

BC Tel, for example, has cut its
internal paper consumption by
20,000 pages per year. Purdy’s
Chocolates reuse shipping cartons
and have extended a shipping car-
ton's life up to five years.

In celebration of the recent
Environment Week, the GVRD ree-
ognized the following companies as
role models: for waste reduction and
recycling in the North Shore busi-
ness community.

& The North Shore News has been
involved in an extensive recycling
program for over four years. The
News recycles newspapers, mixed
paper, cardboard, plastics, pop bot-
les and cans. It also uses recycled
paper products.

The News doesn't use disposable
cups or dishes in its offices,

@ The Cactus Club Café in North
Vancouver uses recycling guide-
lines set by head office for all
Lower Mainland Cactus Club
Cafés. It's company policy to recy-
cle cardboard, cans, glass and plas-

reduce excess waste they decided to
go together and share the costs of
recycling cardboard. The Bike
Cellar also collects bottles. cans and
newspapers. West of Java uses a lot
of milk, so they are happy to recy-
cle their four-litre plastic milk jugs.

Hollyburn House is a retirement
residence located just west of
Ambleside in West Vancouver, and
home to over 1CO_ seniors.
Management and staff have made a
conscious effort over the past few
years to alter their habits in favor of

the environment.

Some of their initiatives inchude:
reeyeling of newspapers, cans,
glass, plastic milk jugs and card-
board. Stadonery is printed on recy-
cled paper. and copying is done
double-sided with scrap puper recy-
cled as seratch pads.

From Hollyburn House to
Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. in
North Vancouver, the motivation is
the same but the products being
reeveled differ,

Vancouver Shipyards is separat-

ing its office paper, cardboard and
wood products for recycling. Scrap
stecl is collected and sold to a serap
dealer and of filters are also recy-
cled. A new purchasing policy has
them buying paint thinners in bulk
instead of buying five-gallon cans.
Gray primer paint is also purchased
in 350-pallon containers as well.
This policy has greatly reduced the
amount of paint cans going to the
landfill.
B Lutine’s hair salon in Deep Cove
is owned by Lutine Bjornson, an
individual committed to recycling
and reducing. She recycles paper.
cardboard, plastics. and offers her
clients a product-refill program. She
switched her line of hair color to
that of a manufacturer who takes
the containers back and recycles
them. In addition, Lutine cuts up
old towels to use as strips around
clients’ necks instead of using
paper.
