Van school POWER TRANSMISSION lines near Boundary Community school in Lynn Valley might be increasing the chances that some students will get leukemia, parents and concerned residents were told on Wednesday night. By Bruce Methven Contributing Writer The warning came from Chire Alston. co-ordinator for the Coalition to Reduce Electropollution (CORE). while speaking about-the relationship between electromag: netic fields (EMF) and health. F SEND LCR BRILL Nisa oad Beeb Beta REACHING E In most cases, she said, duration of expo- sure and proximily to the EMF source ure the determining factors. Alston said that both industry and govern- ment deny there is a significant health risk. “This issue will only be resolved through community action,” she said. Alston established CORE in 1992 and has been especially active in| Della and Tsawwassen, pressuring B.C. Hydro and industry to admit there is a correlation between high EMF and incidences of certain types of cancer, CORE publishes a quarterly newsletter, has aosmall library of information on EMF and offers support and education to those interested io the issue. Speaking at the Karen Magnussen arena, which is Jocated under the same transmission line that passes near Boundary school, Alston said the arena had “tremendously high readings” according to her Gauss meter, a device used to measure EMF, Alston cited several studies that have pro- vided mounting evidence that people exposed to high levels of EMP have unusual- ly high rates of cancer. ; A 1992 Swedish study concluded that children living near power lines had triple the average rates of leukemia. Alston said the results of the study were so conclusive that Swedish utility compinies subsequently accepted the findings. They now regulate the construction of power tines. survey and monitor existing power lines near schools and even remove some transmission lines that have high EMF levels. The Swedish government admits that power line magnetic fields are a cause of cancer in humans, especially children and is now looking at ways to reduce the EMF exposure to children and adults, said Alston. The Swedish findings were duplicated in Denmark and Finkind. where studies found the rate of childhood leukemia increased between three and five times when long-term exposure Was above two milligauss, Alston said in California there is a bill forbidding levels higher than that at daycares See Hydro page 3 SURGE Te I I ON ISS SY ERY DOOR ON THE NORTH SHORE SINCE 1969
