4@ - Wednesday, January 12, 1994 — INQUIRING REPORTER North Shore News EARLIER THIS week Prime Minister Jean Chretien told United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that Canadian Parliament would debate its commitment to place more than 2,000 peacekeeping troops in the former Yugoslavia. Boutros-Ghali said he would not try to persuade the Canadians to stay if they did not want to renew their commitment after their mandate expires in March. As a member state of the UN, Canada could fulfii its commitment in other areas of the world where peacekeepers are needed. The UN is currently debating using sir cover for its humanitarian convoys and/or air strikes in Bosnia, Some, including French and British negotiators, are encouraging the threst fo pull out in the belief that it may accelerate a peace plan in the area.
