AirCare layofis THIRTEEN OF 28 AirCare workers ut the North Shore station were laid off on Thursday, April 22. Ebco-Hamilton Partners spokesman Scott Latham said the layoffs, totalling 125 on the Lower Moinland, resulted after a volume decrease at AirCare stations. He said the decrease was related to a Motor Vehicle Branch’s decision to permit mandatory April AirCare inspections to take place 90 days after buying insurance. Meanwhile on Tuesday, bargaining talks broke off be- tween the BC Government Employces’ Union (BCGEU), which represents AirCare workers, snd Ebco-Hamilion Partners, which was awarded the original government coutract to operate the Lower Mainland AirCare sta- tions. The BCGEU proposed reducing its hourly rate demand by about $3, According io the BCGEU, the union hus proposed that lane Inspectors get approximately $11 an hour, in- stead of the original proposal of $14 an hour, AirCare lane inspectors currently make approximately $7.25 an hour. Ebco-Hamilton Partners offered the workers inereases to approximately $7.87 un bour. BCGEU spokesman Soren Bech said workers at all AirCare stations will go en strike on May 1 if Ebeo- Hamilton Partners doesn't make an acceptable offer by the ead of April. LGH jobs cut EIGHT MANAGEMENT positions have been eliminated this month ut Lions Gate Hospital (LGH). Three people affected by the move have qualified for early retirement, Five people were laid off. In addition,. the hospital has created (three new management positions as part of a restructuring process, said LGH president Bob Smith. He sald the management positions were probably the only jobs: being eliminated under the new budget, The move is also related to 9 health ministry directive toward community-based health service. _ “We did a fairly tight budget for this year. And we received relatively close to what we expected,"”’ said Smith. He said he didn’t anticipate any more layoffs. The eliminated management jobs were in the finance department, nutrition services, information services, plant services and nursing administration. . The hospital’s Crescent cafeteria, located in the base- ment of the 1961 nursing tower, was closed on April 18 to meet budget plans and make way for future expanston of the hospital’s kitchen. The Terrace cafeteria, in the north lobby of the hospital, will expand its hours to maintain meal service. Fire cause found THE SUSPECTED cause of a fire that extensively dam- aged the Race Rock Yacht Services building in West Vancouver on Tuesday, April 6, has been attributed to a | heat lamp. used to keep several exotic birds warm, ac- cording to a West Vancouver Fire Department spokesman. The birds were killed in the blaze. The commercial building, located at 5908 Marine Dr., was extensively damaged in the blaze. ' The east end of the building’s roof was burned off, and there was extensive electrical damage to the struc- - ture. . The northeast comer of the building was also severely damaged. . The exotic birds were stored at the commercial build- ing by the daughter of one of the occupants.
