Spirit of the Mask airs on U.TV.
(Feb. 9 at 9 p.m.).

Produced by North Van-
couver-based Gryphon Produc-
tions, the show is narrated by the
author of The Serpent and the
Rainbow, Wade Davis, and ex-

plores the significance of the mask °

in native spiritual rites and art.

The hour-long program offers a
truly rare glimpse into traditicnal
native rites, such as the potlatch,
and incorporates beautifully ex-
ecuted dramatizations of masked
beings dancing in the forests.

“People go to museums and’
look at masks as decorative ‘ob-
jects. What I wanted to do was
approach it from the view that-we
were all tribal traditions at one
time and that we all , donned
to contact the spirit
