Artists question focus of study AT WHAT was described as the largest meetirig of artists on the North Shore in recent memory, the North Vancouver arts com- munity sent a strong message to the North Shore Arts Commission that recommendations contained in the commission’s arts facilities report are not acceptable. Phase one of the government- funded study, released last fall, has recommended three new regional. arts’. centres, including an art ‘gallery, performance centre and museum, be created on the North Shore. North Vancouver -Community Arts Council president Irwin Oostindie said the artists who at- tended last Thursday's artists’ forum. made it clear they will not support phase two of the facilities report unless it addresses the need for more rehearsal: and studio Space. “Everyone, was questioning why (phase one of} the Arts Commission study Would focus on big buildings when everyone in the room stated they had different needs, such as more studio and rehearsal space,” said Oostindie. “People also made it clear they . want these studios to be run by ar- - tists and not by government committees." . Oostindie said there are several empty ‘spaces that could be con- verted to-artist- studios, such as schools -and Lower Lonsdale warehouses, What is needed is the government will to help artists ac- cess these spaces. . The artwork was created by North Shore artists for entry into the provincial Images and Objects X{ Exhibit, held in Trail in May.
