i / j / West CARIBBEAN DAY RETURNS TO WATERFRONT PARK NEW ORLEANS has its Mardi Gras. Trinidad has its an- nual Carnival. And, not to be left out, the North Shore is looking forward to the third annual Caribbean Day at Waterfront Park. Caribbean Day 90. scheduled for Sunday, July 29, is being or- ganized by the Richmond-based Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of B.C. The 75-member group was formed in 1987 to sup- port immigrants from the Carib- bean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, inform them about their rights and responsibilities as citi- zens of this province. provide them with a social and educational network and give other Canadians a taste of cultural life in the Car- ibbean. Society (treasurer Lyris Aquing says Caribbean Day is reminiscent of the annual Carnival in Trinidad, held, like Mardi Gras, on the two days prior to Ash Wednesday. During the two weeks prior to the Trinidad Carnivai, calypso and band contests are held, and anticipation builds to the Carnival opening at 5 a.m. Monday, when brass and stcel bands, dancers and costumed revellers take to the streets until Tuesday at midnight. According to Aquing, the FAX: 984-4478 Trinidad Carnival originated in the time of slavery. ““Yhe music was the Africans’ way of airing their views without anyone taking serious offence,” she said. In North Vancouver, however, Caribbean Day gives Canadians of all ethnic backgrounds the oppor- tunity to experience Caribbean culture first hand. A costumed parade of children will start the festivities at 11 a.m., and all day until 7 p.m. people will enjoy steel bands, calypso and reggae music. A highlight for participants and spectators alike is sure to be the annual limbo contest. Caribbean cuisine will be avail- able, and ethnic arts and crafts displayed. “People are looking forward to it again this year,’’ Aquing said, recalling the popularity the festival has enjoyed in years past. Various car clubs will also be showing off their vehicles to the crowd at Waterfront Park during the event, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cc OERINGS Abbey Customiser 4" Mini blinds Sale ends July 34/90 .
