new and existing neighborhoods
would ‘‘have great social and eco-
nomic costs in the long term.’”

Downing’s report will be the
basis of a district application to the
Ministry of Municipal Affairs for
a Renial Housing Strategy Grant.

First announced in the March
provincial budget, the grants will
allow ‘“‘municipalities and regional
districts to take a serious look at
their communities’ needs for rental
housing and to devise strategies to
meet this need,’’ said Rita
Johnston, Minister of Municipal
Affairs.

A $£0,000 grant would be pro-
vided by the province to pay for
the development of the strategy,
and the district will hire a tem-
porary researcher to work with
Downing in addressing:

housing now and for the next five
