Hodge surveyed 150 seniors this summer to identify the needs of the elderly in small B.C. com- munities and to examine how well they are being met by government Cat colds dangerous WHEN A cat develops common cold symptoms — runny nose, sneezing, oozing eyes — it’s possi- ble that those who love and hug it the most will also become infected. According to Dr. Ted Rude, a veterinarian and feline disease specialist, the cause of ‘‘cold-like’”’ symptoms in cats is often the highly contagious Chlamydia psittaci, an infectious agent that can cause conjunctivitis in humans. “Outside of rabies, chlamydia is one of the most commonly-spread infectious diseases from pets to people,”’ he says. Fortunately, the threat of chlamydia is no reason to set your pet packing. Simply ask your veterinarian if your cat haus been vaccinated with Eclipse 4, a pro- duct of Solvay Veterinary, Inc. “Veterinarians routinely im- munize cats against common respi- ratory diseases, but only Eclipse 4 has proved to be effective against chlamydia,'’ Dr. Rude says. When administered to cats, the unique vaccine will prevent symp- toms of chlamydiosis and most other common respiratory diseases for at least a year. 9 naa and service agencies. “The need for transportation is overwhelming because it's linked to so many other activities,"’ he says. ‘In 98 per cent of B.C.'s small towns no public transporta- tion or taxi services exist. When the nearest doctor is in the next town and food stores are located miles away, this becomes a serious problem for many elderly citizens. At least one quarter of the seniors x AMD we surveyed don't drive.”” Other major concerns for seniors are access to health care, help with home maintenance and tepairs, and companionship. “Mast small towns have very high proportions of elderly citi- zens, in some cases up to 40 per cent of the population,’ says Hodge. ‘‘Yet cften the needs and concerns of seniors go unheard in the province.”’ ENJOY A SUPER WHIST) °° SHOWCASE FESTIVAL Met peprintiast’ #“7° all the compete in the (7:2 fo A Se FeS for Everyone during the Week. “.
