SOUTH OF Burrard Inlet, you may have noticed, an amazing political drama — or at least a soap -— is un- folding. The old pinko warhorse, Harry Rankin, is running for mayor of Vancouver. As everyone knows, Rankin has been waging his guerrilla struggle for left-wing causes since the Dirty Thirties. A folk hero to some, he is as royal pain in the ass to many others. In any event, after balking at risking his aldermanic seat by taking a run at the top municipal job for so many years, Harry has finally lumbered into the ring. It seemed for a while, if the pundits are to be believed, that Harry was virtually a shoo-in for the mayor's office. Then the scandalous started to surface. Ht turns out that while climbing into the mayorality arena, he was also climbing into somebody's bed. “Dirty Harry’? admits he has been sleeping with a female Van- couver parks commissioner for several months. ¢ guess he was feeling tis oats. Anyway, the old goat Izft his wife of three de- cades, moved out of the house, and shacked up with the commis- sioner, Heckuva way to start your election campaign, Harry! His wife is reportedly putting on a brave face. She actually went ahead with an annual beekyard picnic with all their f friends and political cronies and the media. She got up and made a nice speech about how Harry’s the best man for the mayor’s job, and she’s behind him 100 per cent. She didn't call him a rat or anything. Not many jilted wives would be so magnanimous. Of course, there's a political . undercurrent here that runs deeper than all the steamy Peyton Place who's-sleeping-with-whom material. People on the Left are suppas- ed to be more liberated than others. Theoretically, Left-wing voters won't be swayed against Dirty Harry just because he’s “living in sin,’’ ho, ho, with somebody, | mean, go ahead, throw the first stone, fellow traveller! *...While being grilled by a committee to see if I was worthy of one of the other groups’ endorsement, somebody shot the question at me: ‘When was the last time you Slept with another woman??”’ ECT Socialists don’t believe in sin, anyway. Still, I personally find it all a bit ironic, having plotted briefly with Harry many years ago, when | was young and naive and still a socialist, to take over City Hall. [ was going to run for the of- fice of mayor of Vancouver on an environmental ticket. Back then we are talking the late "60s- ecology was still seen as purely a Left-wing cause. The NDP, as it turned out, was looking for a candidate to back who might also be acceptable to Harry Rankin’s Committee of Progressive Electors, COPE. — Somehow , fit the bill. The sain powerbroker in all this was Harry, the COPE kingpin. | had to go down and have lunch with him at the Ter- minal City Club to discuss my platform. The meeting was a disaster. | don't remember if I ever actually gota word in edgewise, but the name of the game quickly became clear. Harry was telling me what to think, what to say, how to say it, and what definitely not to say. My great visions for an en- vironmental crusade somehow got left off the agenda, except to the extent that the ‘‘pollution issue’ fitted in with Harry's brand of Marxism. Later, while being grilled by a committee to see if 1 was worthy of one of the other group’s en- dorsement, somebody shot the question at me: ‘‘When was the last time you slept with another woman?’’ As it so happened, it hadn't been that long ago. The committee’s point was that a candidate had to be squeaky clean to run. { dug it. | wasn’t in- terested in this kind of public scrutiny, thanks. If saints were what was required, I wasn’t their man. they thought bo might Given this and the horrifying | thought of having autocratic old Harry as my political boss, I got out of politics before | even entered. That was nearly 20 years ago. Harry, not one to let go, is still at it. It’s just that his Last Hurrah turns out to be the sound of whoopee. Ard that’s going to cost votes. As a committed socialist, he should be putting the good of the Party ahead of his own ambi- tions, shouldn't he? He should step aside and let a less randy candidate with fewer warts take over.
