Mac- ‘Bean, head of the depart-:. ment, calls it ‘tan outbreak- thar hasn‘t gone away.”” - The contagious disease, which ‘generally hits pre- school and eleraentary aged children, is not dangerous but can be very uncomfor- table, especially when con- tracted by an adult, says Anne Williams, director of nursing at the health department. Since the beginning of the year 94 cases of red measles have been reported. Symp- toms include a dry cough, inflammed eyes that are sen- Silive to light, a runny nose, sore throat, white spots in the mouth and a high fever, Three or four days after ini- tial symptons, a rash will appear on the face and later spread to the body. Whereas last year measles hit the 16, 17 and 18 age bracket, this year more 10 and 13 year-olds are get- ting it. MacBean blames it on a variety of reasons, including the vaccines of 10 and 15 years ago, which he said were not as effective as the ones now. But MacBean says without the MMR vaccine, which is standard at one year of age, measles cases would number in the thousands. The disease is most com- municable three days before eR BL the rash appears and four to five days after. The incuba- tion period is eight to 14 days. Treatment includes bed rest at home.
