AN ALERT diner helped ex-
tinguish a fire in a 1972
Mercedes in the 200 block
West) Esplanade in Narth
Vancouver Wednesday.

According to Inspector
Dave Burgess of the North
Vancouver City Fire
department, a woman
tetnrned to her vehicle after
shopping, started the car,
but upon smelling smoke,
was forced to immediately
vacate the car.

Burgess said as the woman
stood there watching the car
burn, a customer from a
nearby restaurant grabbed a
dry chemical fire extinguisher
kept in the restaurant, ran out
to the car and managed to put
the fire out shortly before fire
crews arrived on the scene.

“Our crews got to the
scene quickly but the dam-
age had been kept pretty
minimal,’’ said Burgess, ad-
ding the woman had just had
carburator work and a
tuneup done on the
Mercedes about one hour
prior to the incident. Accor-
ding to Burgess, the fire oc-
curred near one carburator
close to the fire wall, with
