PEMBERTON Residents don’t like the traffic THE NEWLY-christened Lower Capilano Com- munity Residents Association has served notice to North Vancouver District Council and its plann- ing staff that they are suspicious of what the Marine Drive Corridor Study holds in store for their area. However, the overriding theme of a meeting spon- sored by the Association Tuesday was the group’s op- position to the amount of through traffic currrently travelling the Lower Capilano community and their fears that with the opening of the Save-On- Foods complex at Marine Drive and Bridgman Avenue, traffic problems will only multiply. In a presentation to resi- dents, Association member Jerome Irwin said a recent count taken during a four- hour weekday period on Hope Road, Philip Ave. and Bridgman Aveé., showed more than 800 vehicles or approximately 200 per hour travelled the route. Irwin said a questionnaire distributed by the Associa- uon revealed that 98 per cent of the area's residents are in tavor of designating the community streets as local roads. Other survey results show ed residents were S6@ per cent in favor of blocking Garden at Capilano, S9 per cent in favor of blocking Hope at Capilano, 66 per cent in favor of blocking Garden at Hope and 69 per tavor of cent ain blocking through tratfa, between J7th and Mackay Road Irwin said &Y to 92 cent of residents blocking af Hope at per supported traftie at Bridgman oor a lane created be tween Hope and 7th St the oul de sac He added the Assocation weloomed the Dastriotes plans tea conduct a detailed sturdy rate othe Lowe Pemberton area Phe study s terms oof teferenee | teleased Nooo ay poe bude oa neighborhood analysis which allows for the retenmtrot of traf fas CousSul tants estimated i naan Starting Thutsdety WE'RE OPEN LONGER TO SERVE YOU EVEN BETTER! We should go forward, not divide what we have accomplished in the past year.”’ While the majority of questions that followed the presentations dealt with the controversial foreshore lease — drawing from Reid the admission that he would return the lease to the pro- vincial government if he had his way — the first question was directed to Humphreys. “Will you accept the challenge to a_ televised debate?’ he was asked “*No,”’ was Humphreys answer, to applause. Humphreys later elaborated, saying he would not débate Reid under any conditions because ‘‘with the rubbish and stuff that he spoke and what's on that paper (Reid’s election pam- phiet), I am not going to come down to that level."’ Reid got in the last word, quoting American politician Adlai Stevenson as he turned to face Humphreys: ‘‘If you stop telling hes about me, ‘TH stop telling the truth about you.’’ FINANCIAL SERVICES & RETIREMENT PLANNING Bert Wichham Fric ©LU Avis Lapham ATC I Your one-stop financial service centre for: e Annuities, RRSPs, Term Deposits * Retirement Income Funds (RRIF's) e Canada Savings Bonds Bert Wickham & Associates Ltd.
