A7 - Wedmesday, May 12, 1982 - North Shore News Cee ™—C“(‘#”TYYYYNYCYYNN’CC WEST VAN TAXES No bill — Dear Editor: In the recent issue of the West Vancouver Municipal news, there is a statement that some property owners may not have received tax notices by the closing dead- line of July 5, 1982, but these same property owners should pay taxes on or prior to that date regardless. Government, like any other, is a service organization and must ensure that the management of its finances and collection of its fees remain efficient in order for the rest of its operations to be effective. When it appears that normal billing procedure for tax notices has fallen behind, no pay! then one suspects that the rest of the organization is in similar difficulties. The arbitrary demand that the customer pays on a deadline, but the service organization can’t sort out the bills, takes away from the customer one of the few levers that the customer (the public) has. How many people in that same government would pay for a service’ before receiving some _ kind of invoice or account? No one should pay any property taxes by any dead- line unless the tax office has got its own papers in order. E.T. Laker West Vancouver. Dear Editor: Regarding your headkhine of May Sth: as an employee of Canadian Oxy or “Hooker” as you insist on using, I would like to say I’m tired of being harrassed by the “Enquiresque” North Shore News. It is about time the employees of this company stood up and were counted instead of turning the other cheek and hoping the emotionalism would die down. I like my job and don't want to look for another. | live within walking distance of the plant in the “nest of Sheila Gordon supporters” and I feel safer at work than I do walking to and from, the way some people drive these days. Interest rates damage FROM PAGE A6 productive capacity. If on the other hand the high interest rate policy is maintained, not only will new investment be curtailed but our existing productive capacity will also be whittled away. The danger to our productive capacity occurs because when a company goes bankrupt or liquidates, its assets are sold at fire sale prices and in many cases businessmen not only lose all their equity, but they lose their credit rating and motivation as well. As a consequence when_ the economy subsequently recovers, their productive capacity is no longer there. Reduced productive capacity will then result in worse inflation because existing capacity cannot meet growing demands. Therefore, if Trudeau really wants Canada to be in a position to benefit from the recovery when it comes, he should lower interest rates NOW so that some of our existing capacity will not be destroyed, and so_ that Canadian business will have a head start over the Americans when recovery does come.
