Dear Editor: I am writing this letter as a part of the continuing effort of the Capilano College Student Society to keep the public informed of the current struggle between students and the Capilano College Board over tuition increases and student ac- cessibility. In particular, I should like to point out an apparent misconstruction of the facts by College Principal Paul Gallagher. At the College Board meeting of Nov. 18, 1980, Carl Hunter, Chairman ofethe Finance Committee, a subcommittee of the College Board, summarized the ‘committee’s view on this subject by saying that, after receiving a delegation of students and ai 1,100- signature petition opposed to tuition fee increases, the committee had decided that an increase for 1981/82 was necessary. -In an article in the North Shore News Nov. 19, 1980, Dear Editor: Your editorial calling for the facts regarding the chemical industry on the North Shore is most timely. It can be applied directly to the recent statements by the Chemical Hazards Alert Committee, that Hooker Chemicals is planning a 14 million dollar expansion of their North Vancouver plant. The conclusion of the Finance Committee seems to render Paul Gallagher’s comments invalid. Although the College Board, the ultimate decision-making body of the College, must decide on whether or not to accept the recommendations of the Finance Committee, the Student Society feels a rubber-stamp approval is most likely. It is my perception that the College Board accepted as fate thesnecessity for a tuition fee increase when they first became aware of misrepresentation of the facts. No expansion is planned. The proposed expenditure is to upgrade an unreliable and uneconmical section of the caustic evaporation system and replace it with safer and more efficient euipment. One would‘ expect that expenditures to improve the plant would receive praise from those professing to be the government's provincial discussion paper on ttition fees. That was in September. Despite continuous Student Socie demands for an accessibility study before raising fees to determine the impact of raised tuition fees on student accessibility to higher education, the College Board appears quite willing to accept increased tuition as a necessity. For a College Board that publicly states its com- mitment to accessibility, their present course, as I perceive it, is hypocritical. Capilano students, faculty and staff must ask them- selves: “Is the College Board acting in the best interests of the College?” Fhe Capilano College Student Society, the Association of University and College Employees Local 4, the Capilano College Faculty Association and the Principal’s Advisory Committee all actively oppose any increase in interested in safety, rather than the biased criticism of which this group is guilty. Statements in the past from spokespersons for this group have demanded that local industry maintains the highest possible standards. It is sad commentary on this group when industry is condemned for taking steps which will improve safety and working conditions. One Christian replies know that they are Indian and Family.
