The North Vancouver
community arts council is
involved in a race against
time to find ways to preserve
the Stoker Farm property in
North Vancouver as a

heritage site, before the
owners of the farm decide to
sell it.

And the arts council has
the backing of North
Vancouver City council and

$1,000 “seed money,” to
help them in their task.
In a special policy meeting

Monday night, City council
endorsed the concept of
preserving the property at
29th Street and Lonsdale
Avenue as a heritage farm.

In addition council has
given the arts council $1,000
and 30 days to complete a
feasibility study which would
say where the money to
purchase the property would
come from.

The time limit was placed
on the study because council
was told that the owners of
the property are anxious to
sell it to somebody, soon.

Ken Thompson, the
sohcitor for the owners, said
“the house is costing the
family $1,000 a month.” to
maintain

He said that the large barn
and sheds on the site were in
an extreme state of
disrepair, the house ws tn a

rescinded a first reading ut

“To put it succinctly the
family cannot afford to

Thompson said the owners
are quite happy to have the
City buy the property, but
council members agreed
with Alderman Gary Payne
that the property “ts a little
too rich for the City’s blood.”

Although no price has
been set for the property,
figures up to $2 million have
been mentioned.

Ella Parkinson, the
executive director of the arts
council said that 30 days was

funding sources to buy the
property.

But council insisted on the
tume limit and Alderman
Payne said they only wanted
the study to cover “the
bottom line - what kind of
money and is it avaiable ”

Alderman Stella Jo Dean
said she had discussed with a
local businessman an idea by
which the family) would
donate one acre of the
property ¢0 the City and
would stall profit

saying only that they were
