Greenpeace a formidable opponent

SRR aldermen know as well
as anyone that even to
the U.S. Government
and the oil company
giants Greenpeace
might become a_ for-
midable opponent
when supporters
channel their collective
determination into
their mext en-
vironmental campaign.

After all, the organization
found any walls of resistance

against them by councils in
North Van City and West

municipal solicitor told
members that their earlier
action in refusing Green-
peace a licence to canvas for
memberships had almost
certainly been illegal.

A delegation of the
“bloody yo-yos” - as
Alderman Jim Ball had

referred to them in council's
discussion - later turned up
to challenge the decision.

When council checked the
legahties, the solicitor said it
was unlikely aldermen had
ever had the power to ap-
prove or disapprove door-to-
door canvassing by any of
the charity groups that had
appeared before it for
sanctioning over the years.

At this point aldermen in
North Van City and West
Van immediately opened the
doors of the ncighboring
municipaliies to Green-
peace
