THE BIG earthquake that all the experts were predic- ting for the Lower Mainland has finally hit, and there is mass confusion everywhere. By Surj Rattan News Reporter The North Shore has, in effect, been cut off from the rest of the Greater Vancouver area as both the Lions Gate and Second Nar- row bridges have been knocked out of commission by the quake. For the next few hours, the B.C. Ambulance Service on the North Shore will play a vital role in treating the injured and finding makeshift accommodation for those in need of medical treat- ment. The above is only an cxample of what could happen if a major disaster were to strike the North Shore and the Lower Mainland. The B.C. Ambulance Service fecognizes the many problems associated with such a disaster and so do the many service clubs on the North Shore. Recently, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, unit 45 club in North Vancouver, donated a huge $2,500 tent to the local ambulance unit. The tent, which can be assembled in approximately 15 minutes, would be used by the North Vancouver ambulance ser- vice in the event of a major North Shore disaster to house patients if there was no other facility into which to put them. He adds that approximately 80 B.C. Ambulance Service personnel live on the North Shore, and once a major disaster hits, they would first be obligated to make sure their homes and families are safe before going to the North Vancouver unit office for further instructions. He adds that the new equipment can help outfit up to 40 rescue personnel in the field. “These personnel will be divid- ed into teams and go where need- ed. The field tent can be totally enclosed and be used as an aid Station prior to casualties being evacuated. We would also use schools and recreation centres to bring people to hospitals,’’ says Jones. ‘‘None of this equipment is of any use to us unless we get the personnel to our station.’’ Ross Peterson, co-ordinator of the North and West Vanccuver Emergency Program, which is responsible for co-ordinating the emergency plans for all three North Shore municipalities, said that when a major disaster strikes, the normal emergency and municipal services will not be enough. ‘*We promote personal preparedness at the individual and family levels so citizens can be self sufficient for at least the first 72 hours uniil professional help ar- rives,”’ says Peterson.
