ONE OF the recent projects of the Canadian Orgznic Growers (COG), which is applauded by the Canadian Garden Council, is the Di- rectory of Organic Agriculture. To give an idea of the diversity of information contained in the new directory, here are three ex- cerpts. The first deals with prairie grasslands and appears in the Manitoba section of the directory. “A century ago, over a million acres of lush tall grass prairie flourished in the Manitoba sun- shine. It appeared limitless. Waves of shoulder-high grasses and wildflowers ran over every horizon. “Today less than 1% of our original tall grass prairie remains! Most of these priceless remnants have no official protection and are rapidly disappearing. ‘What can one person do to save the most productive and bio- logically diverse type of native prairie left in Canada? Nimmo, the directory’s editor, discusses innovative equipment for sus- tainable agriculture. Says Nimmo, “One wouldn’t think that Col- orado potato beetles and propane have much in common. They don’t, especially if you’re Dan Tawezynski of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. “A 70-acre retail potato grow- er, Dan faced a serious problem: massive yearly Colorado beetle in- festations. He was tired of the ac- cepted defoliation/desiccation methods for pre-harvest top-kill- ing of potato vines with her- bicides. “He invented a tractor rear- mounted flaming device (from tool bars, nozzles and hoses in his surplus pile) that fried the beetles, weeds and weed szeds, burned off potato blight diseases, and sing- ZR Full Colour Pix-in-Pix . © 42-Button Master Touch® Universal Remote Matrix Surround Sound/5 Watts per Channel * 13-Jack Audio-Video Monitor Panel with S-Video Connection «Commercial Skip and Parental Controt MODEL £35050S7 RCA HOME THEA PROJECTION ed/collapsed the vines sufficiently to toughen the about-to-be- harvested potatoes for mechanical harvesting.”” The final item has little to do with either gardening or farming but does illustrate the broad spec- trum of organic ideas and con- cepts contained in the directory.
