BUSINESS WAS booming at the
West Vancouver Rec Centre this
summer, but if you are not part of
a regular fitness program yet, you
haven't missed the boat.

**We had our largest summer at-
tendance at fitness classes this
year,’’ states Wendi Lacusta, phys-
ical fitness coordinator for the
West Vancouver Parks and Recre-
ation Department, ‘‘and we have
had more fitness freshmen, people
who have never tried aerobics
classes, join us this year than in my
seven years here.”’

Last season, the West Van-
couver Recreation Centre had an
84-year-old man join the First
Time to Fitness program. He was
going to embark on a new, more
active lifestyle. He is stil! at it a
year later — and vigorously, too.

“One problem the fitness in-
dustry has developed in the last
five years is a sophistication level
that exceeds. newcomers,’’ says
Lacusta, “Classes are either too
hard and uncomfortable, or too
complicated for a novice to join.”

level program called First Time to
Fitness to provide an easy beginn-
ing for a newcomer of any age or
ability.

The course reviews each exercise
that will be encountered in
aerobics classes and explains the
purpose and technique.

Participants also learn what to
do if they physically can not do an
exercise or can not perform a
complicated move.

fully opt out of an exercise in a
way that will not be noticed by
other class members.

Dickson teaches newcomers how
to modify everything su that it is
manageable for them. She instills
in them a confidence and ability in
her class members to go to any
aerobics class and make it
achievable for them.

The four-week program. in-
troduces course members to gym
and pool aerobics classes and to
different studio types and class
styles.

iting her paintings at the Bau-Xi
gallery overtown.

The exhibit, entitied
Episodes, runs unti! Sept. 17 at
the 3045 Granville St. gallery.

“Some of these paintings
developed from a need to Ia-
ment our threatened environ-
ment,"” says Tait. Bones, logs
and debris washed up by the sea
— part of the natural flow of
life cycles — are often symbol-
ized in the paintings as recur-
ring images.
