Dear Editor: The headline in a tlver that we sent to all western resi- dents “They're Moving Marine Drive tor Condos on the Golf Course” was appro- priate, despite the recent unfounded criticism and now back-pedalling by West Vancouver council. The April 4 Gleneagles Corridor Report prepared under the supervision of the Council Standing Committee was received formally by council at a regular public council meeting. Council gave no cautions regarding the contents and recommendations in the report, which were recog- nized as being endorsed by the three council memoers on the standing committee. Surprise to council — that the residents read the report and conveyed strong criticism at its May 10 public informa- tion meeting, attended by some 300 residents. Not surprising that now council is trying to distance Miartiai arts beat physical education Dear Editor: We have reached a point where something more has to be done in an attempt to stop teen violence. High schools need to provide better solu- tions to this ongoing prob- lem. All teenagers need a way to express their negative ener- gy, but it has to be in a posi- tive way. My solution is to have mandatory drama and martial arts classes within the school systems. Having been enrolled in both, I have gained self- esteem, discipline, and con- trol. Do troubled youth not lack these qualities? Do class- ¢s such as physical education rovide the same beneficial owledge and creative expression? No. Physical Education sucks if you’re not athletic or -into sports. Sure, you may fearn how to hit a ball or run repeatedly in a circle. but you don’t learn about morals and values like in a martial arts class. Teens would benefit great- ly from such a discipline. While exercising, they would learn a respected art, gain self-improvement, and be able to rid themselves of anger by putting that negative energy into practising their kicks and punches. ; Drama allows youth to express themselves through different characters. Who needs therapy when you can take an acting class? It’s cheaper, and it’s fun. I¢’s an excellent way to learn how to communicate with people, and believe in oneself when verbally expressing opinions and thoughts. Andrea Arscott North Vancouver a ae itself from this report.
