14 - Wecnesday January 13. 1999 —- North Snore News north shore news __ MAIL Box istrict 44 should pay for its own fields Open letter to the Mayor and Council of North Vancouver District: 1 would like to congratulate council on its opposition to the proposed Joint Use of Public Facilities, reported in the Dee. 30 North Shore News. As T understand it, the proposal would sce district taxpayers shouldering the liens share of the cost to upgrade North Vancouver School District 44's playing fields. [think this is a ridiculous proposal. It is detinitely not a win-win situation. The school district gains a massive infusion of municipal tay dollars while district taxpayers get nothing in return (ic. we get ta con- tinue to use the facilities we are already paying taxes for and already using.) For years School District 44 has been negligent with its allo- cation of tax dollars. Our schools and playing fields, built using millions of our zax dollars have been allowed to decay to their present appalling state. The only significant maintenance done recently, the Handsworth high school track reconstruction, was paid tor by the district, not School District 44. T agree our school playing fields are badly in need of repair. But every other school district in the province seems to be able to maintain its playing tields with school board funds — why not School District 443 The board insists it is under funded. Perhaps it is But, whether our school district is poorly managed or the Ministry of Education discriminates against North Vancouver residents, is beside the point. It is nor North Vancouver District's respon- sibility to rectify the problem. As a district taxpayer and 3 School District 44 taxpaver [ think Tam being taxed enough by both. [ don’t want my district raxes paying for something my school taxes should already cover. | am glad district council agrees.
