Defended’ at museum

ANYONE WHO has walked
University of B.C.'s Tower Beach
will have happened upon the
remains of gun emplacements and
wondered when and why they were
built.

Imagine, Vancouver's beaches
armed to protect citizens from
enemy attack! During the Second
World War, forts, heavy anti-air-
craft batteries, and searchlights dot-
ted our coast from Steveston to Pt.
Atkinson.

Intended to guard Canada's
western seaport, railway terminals.
and wartime shipyards, these arma-

ments, at best, provided some reas-
surance that protection from enemy
attack did exist.

Ships passing under Lions Gate
Bridge were inspected by [0 large
searchlights supported by two 12-
pounder guns, The lights would
scan the water's surface in search
of any unwelcome object, possibly
a foreign submarine’s periscope.

Thankfully, the defences were
never fully employed: they did
however play a role in Canada’s
war clfort.

There are curious little charac-
ters in many of Katharina’s paint-
ings. With big heads and closely set
eyes, they appear comical and sad,
gnomish and human. Their bodies
have the simplicity of a plain night
shirt, their faces and posture

express a whole range of emotions.

They are innocent children or wise
old men; they wear crowns or long
pointed night caps. They dangle on
strings or simply look serene. And
all tell a story.’

It’s difficult to choose a
favorite, but if pressed 1 would run
away with the cardinal, He stands
in a glowing red robe with a wag-
gon-wheel hat and forms a graceful
curve. The white flowers at the end
of his long arm give him an inno-
cent look. The colors that surround
him form an entire spectrum, from
soft warm yellow to hot pink to
passionate red, The painting is
aptly called ‘Flowers of Desire’.

“Burratini’ shows a thin figure
dangling from a number of strings,
a boneless and willing puppet.
Above it, in 4 separate frame, the
puppeteers hold the strings, peering
over the edge of the frame to assure
their control. The scene is reminis-
cent of life’s more frustrating
moments.

The most striking image of
painted light occurs in ‘The
Beginning’. The lower part of the
painting shows a thin, maroon-col-
ored band, shaped into strong
curves right across the canvas. The
deepest curve in the centre cradles
a bright sphere surrounded by lumi-
nous light,

work”. it was a wonderful com-
meat to hear from an old friend
who has always been a master at
down-playing.her talent.
Katharina’s paintings will be on
display at the Torres Gallery at
2255 West Broadway until Nov.
12.
