48 - Friday, July 3, 1992 - North Shore News Central School <: THE FIRST structure on this site was North Van- couver School, which was built in 1902. ~ In 1907 the building was altered and additions were made. ‘Viewed from 4th Street, the two-room addition is evident, and ~ it is from this location that many early school photographs have been taken. At the time of these changes, in 1907, the name of the school was changed to Central School. The building also housed North Vancouver City Hall from 1915 until 1975. The city hall then moved to its . present location at 141 West 14th St., North Vancouver. This symmetrically massed in- stitutional building has a full basement and is two storeys high. The original domes at the rear of the building, evident in early photographs, have been removed, and the roofing and siding mate- tials have been changed over the years. Now known as ‘‘Presentation House,”’ it is the home of a number of community groups and organizations, and is the centre for the visual and performing arts - in North Vancouver City. Professional and community theatre groups perform here, and Canada’s principal photography gallery on the West Coast is located on the top floor. The photography gallery exhibits con- temporary Canadian photo-based NORTH SHORE HERITAGE work and related media, which tours two or three exhibitions each year across Canada. The North Vancouver Arts Council is Jocated in this building, as is the North Shore Museum and Archives. Founded in 1971, as a Centen- nial project, the primary purpose of the museum and archives is the preservation of the history of the ” focal area in photographs, docu- ments and artifacts. The museum was first opened in 1972 and was housed in the origi- nal PGE Station, now located in Mahon Park. The museum and archives of- ficially opened its doors to the public at ‘‘Presentation House”’ on Sept. 13, 1976. The archives has a collection of over 8,000 historic photographs of the local area that have been ei- ther donated or lent by their owners for copying and are stored in one of the old city hall vaults, along with early city records and other reference materials which are available to researchers and visitors. The museum exhibits change every three or four months and reflect various historical aspects of ~ the North Shore. The entrance to the museum is the centre door in the illustration, - which faces 4th Street. — by Dorothy Foster RE-ROoFING? : CALL CONSOLIDATED ROOFING SERVICES FREE ESTIMATES - PROMPT, COURTEOUS SERVICE © Re-Reofing and New Roofing © General Roof Repair © Cedar Shokes and Shingles ® Asphalt Shingles 980-0677 & Custom buiit closet organizer Installed or Do-it-yourself Mirror Doors Meiamine finish Elfa Baskets Wire shelving Accessories: showroom.
