44 — Friday, December 20, 1991 — North Shore News New owner yet to decide on the fate of Odeon building THE WEST Vancouver Odeon’s days are finished, but what will happen to the buiiding is anybody's guess. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter Depending on whom you talk to, the structure, more than 40 years old, will either be demolish- ed as early as tomorrow, in Feb- cuary, Or not at all. **Our client has a development permit and he has every right to develop the site,’’ said Eric Chung of Pacific Architectural Inc., who represents the owner. When asked if the owner plans to tear the building dowr, Chung teplied: ‘Most likely, yes; We don’t know when — it could be tomorrow or the next day. It is imminent.” Chung said the owner is plan- ning to build a commercial com- _ Plex .on the site; however, he would not give specifics. West Vancouver municipal planning department confirmed the owner holds a permit to build a low-rise office building on the site. Council approved it last year. But, they said, he does not have a permit to tear the building down. A demolition. permit must be issued by the municipal building department, and that, they said, would take time. However, when contacted by planning, Chung told them that demolition of the build- ing is merely ‘‘one option’’ facing the owner. But James Hazell, who heads ACTION (Acknowleding Artistic Talent in Our Neighborhood), the group that wants to turn the theatre into a cultural centre, said one of his group members was told by the company representing the owner, Vancouver Hi-Lite Construction Ltd., that the theatre would be torn down the first week of February. “ve heard that they can't sell the site because it’s terribly over- priced and they’ve got structural problems,’’ said Hazell. : The owner is asking $3.9 mil- fion for the land and building, but Hazell says it’s only worth $2.5 million. In Hazell’s opinion, building an office complex on the site would be a waste seeing that there are . presently 21 stores sitting empty in Ambleside. Still, he would rather see the building saved and rebuilt than. reduced to rubble. If the theatre is demolished,-he said, it will be twice as hard for the-district to find another site for a cultural centre. “Iv’s strictly up to municipal counci] now,’’ he says.
