28 - Friday, May 17, 1991 - North Shore News ~ AUTOMOTIVES Tips on maintaining car’s finish ONE OF the easiest and often the most gratifying jobs a do-it- yourselfer can perform is to main- tain a car’s finish. By preserving a showroom shine, you not only can prolong the life of the finish, you also can help maintain your car’s resale value. This is especially important dur- ing the summer months when the elements can take their toll on a car’s finish. Before you apply wax, you should thoroughly wash the car’s finish to remove all mud, road salt and insects. This should be done in a shady area to avoid spotting and streaking. The first step in washing the finish is to completely hose down the car. Thea, fill a bucket with water and add a small amount of a specially formulated car-washing product to loosen dirt and other debris from all car finishes. Then, using a soft sponge, wash the car one section at a time. For best results, make sure you rinse the sponge frequently to avoid scratching the finish with dirt or grit. After washing, rinse all soap and grit away and dry the finish with a chamois or dry terry cloth towel. Over the past 10 years, an in- creasing number of automobile manufacturers have been applying “clear-coat’’ finishes on new cars. More than 90% of the cars cur- rently being built will have clear coat finishes. ra A clear coat finish, which con- sists of a transparent paint layer that seals in the finish’s thin color coat underneath, can provide enhanced luster to the finish’s ap- pearance. However, you can casily seratch a clear coat surface by us- ing a wax that contains harsh abrasives, As in washing, you should always wax the cac in a shady area. And, the wax should be ap- plied in a circular motion to one section at a time. After the wax has dried, use a soft cotton towel or cloth to buff the finish. Although the clear coat finishes represent the current trend in the automotive industry, more than 60% of the cars on the road today still have conventional finishes that also need a special kind of care. {In a conventional finish ap- plication method, a coat of col- ored paint is applied over a primer. The process leaves a layer of colored paint exposed to pollu- tants and other elements that can cause the surface to oxidize, which results in a dull, chalky appear- ance. You can remove oxidation by using a wax designed specifically for conventional car finishes. It can remove the cloudy film from an oxidized finish and help restore the original showroom shine with little effort. Many of these pro- ducts also lay down a carnauba wax coating to provide the finish with protection against dirt and Make sure cooling system is ready for hot summer WHEN SUMMER'S heat hits, will your car’s cooling system be ready to withstand the high temperatures? If not, the engine could overheat, leaving you stranded with an expensive repair bill. With summer around the cor- ner, it’s the perfect tire to make sure your cooling system is ready to go the distance during hat weather. \ecording (o experts, you sk uid flush your cooling system and refill it with fresh antifreeze and water mixture once a year. That’s because even if your ex- isting antifreeze tests OK for boil-over protection, its rust and corrosion inhibiters may be weak and corrosion ineffective. In fact, approximately 79% of key corro- sion inhibitors can be depleted during a year of driving. The first step in changing your old antifreeze is to flush the cool- ing system thoroughly. However, flushing the cooling system with just water can leave behind grease, dirt and other sed- iment, which can restrict free coolant flow and harm the system. Once the system has been thoroughly flushed, the next step is to refiil it with the proper mix- ture of antifreeze and water. The mixture amount depends on the cooling system's capacity. which you can determine by checking the owner’s manual. A minimum 50-50 mix of an- tifreeze/coalant and water raises a cooling system's boiling point to 265°F (with a 15-pound pressure cap), and a 70-30 mix (70% an- tifreeze/coolant to water) will provide maximum-boail over pro- tection up to 276°F (with a 15- pound pressure cap). By properly miaiataining your car’s cooling system now, vou can help to ensure that it will be pro- tected from hot summer weather, and be able to provide you and your family with comfortable, trouble-free driving throughout the summer months.
