21 - Friday, June 1, 1990 - North Shore News MacGregor look on. MOTORISTS CONCERNED about their car’s exhaust emis- . Sions are invited to participate in free vehicle exhaust emission tests being conducted by BCIT at Brentwood Mall and on campus during Canadian Environment Week, June 3 to 9. The testing program is being organized by Dr. Joffre M. Berry, head of BCIT’s En- . vironmental Chemistry Program. The purpose is to increase awareness of the effect of auto exhaust on air quality and to promote the value of engine maintenance in minimizing pollu- tant emissions into the environ- ment. Initial funding came from En- vironment Canada with addi- tional contributions and support provided by B.C. Gas, B.C. Hydro and the GVRD. **Automobile exhaust fumes consisting of casbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen ox- ides and hydrocarbons contribute 75 per cent of the pollutants found in the as in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland,’’ says Berry. ‘“‘While new technology has PETER GRIFFITHS 217B (Rear) West Ist Street North Vancouver, B.C. At Brentwood Mall, BCIT will test any vehicle volunteered, checking for the integrity of emission control devices, and re- cording carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Motorists will receive a copy of the test results and advice on what they can do to reduce automobile air pollution. A display sponsored by B.C. Gas will promote the need for environmental responsibility and feature various forms of alter- native fuels. Information on fleet emissions will be presented. Hours of operation at Brent- wood Mall are noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 3 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Gn Saturday, June 9, testing will be done from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At BCIT, motorists can bring their cars from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., by appointment. Call Joffre Berry at 988-1404 AS PROMISED last week, here is more information for new motorists about ICBC Autoplan insurance. The auto insurance premium you pay in B.C. takes into account a number of factors: Where you drive B.C. is divided into 15 ter- ritories, and your premium de- pends on where you live. Motorists in the Kootenays, with their rela- tively low number of claims, pay less than drivers in the Lower Mainland, where most claims are reported. What you buy Naturally, if you buy extra third party liability coverage, or options like collision and comprehensive, your premium will be higher. What you drive Your premiums fer collision and comprehensive depend on the deductible you choose (higher deductibles mean lower premiums) and on the value of your vehicle. It makes sense...a Rolls costs more to repair or replace than your trusty old Dodge Dart. Why you drive People who drive for pleasure only pay less for auto insurance than those who commute to or from work, or use their vehicles for business. How you drive All other factors being equal, B.C. motorists who do not cause accidents pay less for their in- surance than those who do, thanks to ICBC’s Claim-Rated Scale. YE S AutoTopic Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Your 1990 Autoplan Motorist Kit has all the details on how claim-free motorists can qualify for premium discounts of up to 40 per cent and why those who cause accidents pay premium surcharges. If you have just moved to B.C., you can qualify for a Claim-Rated Scale discount if your previous in- surer supplies you with a letter verifying your claims record. Check with your Autoplan broker for details. The Claim-Rated Scale is one example of how ICBC differs from private insurance companies. Private insurers in places like Alberta and Ontario may use your age, sex, marital status or occupa- tion as factors to determine your premium, something ICBC does not do. A recent premium comparison conducted by The Edmonton Sun notes that a 20-year-old in B.C. qualifying for the full claim-rated scale discount pays $878 for his in- surance. In Edmonton, his premium would be $2,119, because his age and sex place him in a “thigh risk’’ group, despite his ac- tual driving record. Likewise in Toronto, he would have to pay $3,765! Another factor is availability. A private insurance company may choose not to insure you for any number of reasons which may, or may not have anything to do with your driving record. If they do sell you insurance, they can limit the amount you buy and, if you have a number of claims, they may cancel your policy in mid-term. Here, as long as you have a valid B.C. driver's licence, ICBC will sell you all the coverage you need. Naturally, a poor driving record means paying a higher premium. Except in extremely rare cases involving people who owe us a great deal of money, ICBC does not cancel Autoplan policies. Next week, a chance to try your hand at being an insurance ad- juster. We'll present you with details of an actual claim with an unusual twist and challenge you to determine coverage and liability. wocccccccceocncoecec “Safety is no accident, so PLAYSAFE!” ih AV The War Amps of Canada SOOSSSOSCHOSSCOSHOCOSOS Available Equipment: ¢ 2.6 titre — available ¢ 3 litre V6-18 valve — available e Dual air conditioning — available « Courtesy glass — available « Towing package (up to 4300 Ibs.) — available 4x4 — available ¢ 5-spd. trans. — available « Auto trans — available « ABS brakes — standard © 15"" wheel — available « Mag wheels — available ¢ 5x7 seater — available STARTING FROM 1 S PLUS P.D.I. & FREIGHT — $595 5400 _ LEASING AVAILABLE AND BANK FINANCING 0.A.C. 700 Marine Drive, North Vancouver shore Notishore 987-4458 Mon Thurs 9-9 Fri.
