LANG TWANGS; Manteca moves mellifluously; Attila rages; Boyoyos bounce. *e** kd. lang and the reclines — Abselute Torch And Twang, Sire 1989 Our very own sweet-hearted country vixen is back in basic country-swing form after flirting with glossy production values on last year’s Owen Bradley Sessions. The bulk of this marvelously maudlin mess of tunes, highlighted by the burning Didn’t land the the bronco-breakin’ Walkin’ In And Out Of Your Arms, was penned by lang and reclining cohort Ben Mink. Nothing is superfluous. And it ends as well as it begins with Nowhere To Stand, a powerfui tour de force about how unthink- ingly wrong some of us trest our children. *** Manteca — Perfect Foot, Duke Street Records 1989 The Canadian Mantecans pump out inside jazz notes within the North Shore News framework of a nine-member (plus guest musicians) semi-big band. The unit’s creative core is found in keyboardists Aaron Davis and Rick Tait. The two contribute eight of the nine compositions on the release. ‘danteca melody moves via syn- thesizer. The delivery is humaniz- ed with a multiple-layer wrapping of borgos, conga, talking drum and rock-heavy drum kit poun- ding. For thematic inspiration, the Mantecans draw heavily on feel- good Soca and Samba vibes. Bass man Henry Heillig keeps things funky-edged, while a four-man horn section injects a touch of Latin swing to the proceedings. Cleanly produced by band leader and percussionist Matt Zimbel, Perfect Foot, the group's fifth release in 10 years of playing together, is a tight piece of danceable ensemble work. ** Attila The Stockbroker — “Scornflakes’’, Probe Plus Re- cords 1989 Rumor has it that Attila, a self- YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY TELEVISION CHANNEL © PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS confessed performing poet/ aesthete/linguist/ death metal mandola wizard, was once a stockb-oker. Something snapped somewhere and the tnglishman hasn‘t looked back since. MICHAEL BECKER record review There are two ways to consider this nasal and sustained lunacy. One assessment would see this as the brilliant by-product of a mad- man savant. Or it might be cynically written off as ill- humared, foam-from-the-lips spit- tle and blathering. The ivuth is somewhere in be- tween. The “‘wordside’’ of the disc includes some sharply peevish spoken word play. The he tapers Chore Your Chane Be Bed Chace sy. $1. Particular satiric poignancy is to be found in Libyan Students From Hell!, a ‘‘traditional Libyan heavy metal death folk song.”’ Attila’s local debut is guaranteed to nudge the social outrage level at this month’s Vancouver Folk Music Festival to new heights. Buy this record and listen to it the next time you're in the mood to break something. *** The Boyoyo Boys — Tj Tc- day, Aural Tradition Records 88 if you caught the polyrhythmic fever on Paul Simon’s Graceland disc, or if you first stepped into the heated groove at the recent jazz fest opener by South Africa's Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, then you would do well to fuel the fire with this one. The Boys are four township jive (Umbaganga) cats from Soweto. This release is toially instrumental and completely invigorating. An unusual sax and violin combina- tion adds an unexpected texture .
