NV teen prodigy gives performance IF THERE is such a thing as a child-turned- -teenage prodigy, North Vancouver pianist Karen Wong is it. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter - At the age of three, before most children are tying their shoelaces, Wong was reading and composing music. At the age of four, she won her first award, competing against pianists up to the age of 12. And now at the age of 13, when most teenagers are tuning into rock *n’ roll, Wong is submerged in the world of international music com- petitions. . On June 25, Wong is having her first solo recital at the recital hall in the music building at UBC. She will be playing works by Bach, Busoni, Beethoven, Ravel, Liszt and Prokofiev. Pemberton Plaza 6:30-7:30 Wong's mother, Pauline, said her daughter ‘‘Ioves the challenge. The more difficult, the more she likes it.’ She was the junior, intermedi- ate, and senior provincial champi- on in the B.C. Festival of the Arts, at the respective ages of seven, eight, 11 and 13. On the national level, Wong was the champion of the Canadian Music Competitions for three con- secutive years, from 1982 to 1984, - and then once again at the age of 10, in the 15-year-old age category. She will be representing B.C. at a national competition in Toronto this August.
