Hughes won with the best overall time for the two-day event, which was comprised of three stages: a 95- kilometre road race,a three-kilometre uphill time trial in which he placed fi first, and a 50-lap criterium. The prize — Air B.C. tickets to any destination in B.C. — wiil be used to take Hughes to the Canadian Nationals in Fort McMur- ray at the end of August. Hughes, recently selected for the B.C. Cycling Team, is in Quebec for two important stage races — the Louis Garneau Grand Prix and the World Amateur Road Trials, June 13-18. N. The tournament, held during the week of June 19-25, is a fun, | unranked amaieur event, designed to encourage the participation ‘of all North Shore resideats. There will be 50 separate events divided into four divisions: juniors (ander 18), adults (over 18), seniors (over 55) and special events for wheelchair sthletes. The tournament wiil also be offering men’s and ladies’ open singles for ranked players and a men’s and ladies’ open doubles event. Play begins Monday, June 19 for aii divisions, with finals for seniors and juniors on Friday, June 23, and adults and special events on Sunday, June 25. Inn shuts out sowen island IN THE North Shore Men's Fastball League this week at Mahon Park, the Lynnwood Inn powered its way to a 4-1 victory over Bowen Island, bringing Lysznwood into a first place tie with the Jack Lonsdate Canadiacs, Lynnwood’s Dan Calli and Jamie Frandsen hit solo home runs, with Frandsen’s missile being a tape measure shot. Lynnwood pitcaer Steve Ross had another strong game, giving up only four ts. In a game against Queens Cross Pub, once again the Lynnwood Ian came out victorious with a 7-5 score after trailing the Cross 5-0 in the third inning. Tugs Pub fell to Jersey City 2-1, witis Tugs’ Larry Grieg pitching a three-hitter but losing it on the Tugs offence. Team eyes Sardinia Cup THE B.C. Senior Women’s All-star soccer team will play in the prestigious Sardinia Cup to be held in Sardinia from June 19 to 29. The B.C. team will compete against teams from the U.S.S.R., China, South America, Sweden and other European countries. Following the tournament, exhibition games will be played iu Milan, Italy before the team returns to Vancouver on July 12. North Vancouver’s Metro Gerela, director of the B.C. Senior Women’s Player Developmeat Program, has scouted players throughout the province prior to selecting the squad that will rep- resent B.C. on the tour. “The B.C. Decathlon championships at Bur- naby’s Swangard Stadium, the 18-year-old Sentinel high student stole the day, placing first in che 10-event competition. Second place went to Mike Neilson of Burnaby Central who was 969 points behind Meyer, and third place to Sen- tinel’s fan Hensen with 5,160, just six points shy of second place. “The weather was terrible,’ Pauline Hedberg, head coach of Sentinel’s Track and Field team along with Glen Close, said of the May 26 championships, ‘Luke could have easily broken a record if the weather was better.’” Meyer is the second male student in the province to have competed in the decathlon event’ from Grade 8 to 12. Last year he won the decathlon at the Western Canadian Juvenile Championships in Ed- monton, and came second in the decathlon at the B.C. Junior Championships in Abbotsford. At the North Shore High School Track and Field Championships on June 2 to 3, Meyer captured firsts in the 110-metre hurdles, high jump and long jump, in which he placed a meet record of 6.96 metres, erasing Peter Nilsson’: s 1979 mark of 6.46 metres. He ran on Sentinel’s senior boys 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams which finished in first place, and was named the senior boys overall aggregate winner of the North Shore track and field meet.
