The junior team also displayed a fine effort, winning the North Shore championship and finishing second in the Vancouver and District tournament. Coaches Val Mills, Judy Rothe, and Derek Goodman sponsor a school badminton club from which they draw their interscholastic players. This enthusiastic group of 65 members play socially one night per week from September through November. All club members are included in league play regardless of skill level. Selections are then made for post season play based on ability. This talented group of athletes will attempt to repeat their winning performance at provincial cham- pionships this spring. Blazers move in on Eliminators THE NORTH Shore Neighbour- hood Blazers moved into a tie for first place with Thunderbird Community Centre Eliminators in recent local ball hockey action. End-to-end action marked this contest for top spot in the Inter- City Under 17 Ball Hockey League. Thunderbird took an early 5-2 lead after the first period, and had North Shore on the run. The Blazers quickly answered back in the second period, largely on the superb scoring attack led by veteran Eric Zaeppernick, who matched five goals for the victors. Zaeppernick combined with brother Rudy Zseppernick and Frank Horedek for five more goals, on the attack. The Blazers moved out in front in the third on goals from forward Kim Lambert, and tied the contest in the final minutes at 11-11. An outstanding performance in goal by net man Paul Marchant kept the Blazers in the game. At 12-11 in the final minute, Thunderbird pulled their goalie for the attack and were snuffed when Zaeppernick threw in a long slap shot to seal the win for North Shore 13-1, in a dramatic finish. Assistant captain Max Hart provided good support for the win. ‘‘Apparently, the Eliminators have not been beaten in two years in the 17 and under division, so we’re very proud of our guys,’’ said Blazer coach Brian Smith. ‘‘Our passing game was outstanding.”’ . Blazer’s next home game against Killarney is on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the North Shore Neighbourhood House. wy @EDIuine | : _A COMMUNITY SERVICE | ac Please give where you see this sign.
