Speaking of duty free, Scan-
dinavian airport prices on liquor
and cigarettes are about equal to
the price we’d pay at our local
stores.

The traveller must know that
although this seems high at the
time, you ain’t seen nuthin’ tiff you
run out and have to buy them in
downtown Stockholm (or Oslo or

Copenhagen).

Scandinavians rarely dine out in
restaurants — the prices are just
too high.

In middle to higher class
establishments, the food prices are
roughly double ours and the drink
prices double to triple.

I also priced various foods in
markets — vegetable prices are
about the same as ours, slightly
higher for things like peppers and
tomatoes (tomatoes were about
$1.30 a pound).

Loca! cheeses are about the same
price as here, as are bread and
assorted cold cuts.

Which brings me to the next
point — how can a iraveller visit

First, the local tourist boards are
happy to line you up with B&B in
private homes.

Next, I'd picnic a lot. Pack the
old string bag, Swiss army knife
and bottle caps! Eat in parks. Or
on street benches. Outdoor food
stands are convenient, too — and
not too expensive.

Another large saving is purchas-
ing a ‘“‘City Card."’ Called by
various names in each city it is a
passport to free admission to most
attractions and free public trans-
portation, both by bus and train.
These are issued for as many days
as you need.

Check out the S.A.S. packages
for as little as $645 U.S, out of
Seattle, including airfare, three
nights hotel, two nights on a ship
to Oslo, including all breakfasts
and two dinners on the ship and a
round-trip day visit to Malmo,
Sweden on the hyrdofoil.

I’m not really sure I visited three
separate countries — but, I'm only
a tourist. All are lovely, and I’m
going back.
