VAN Laser therapy promises A NEW METHOD to help smokers quit the habit also claims to be easy, painless, safe and 85 to 90 per cent effective. Soft Laser Treatment, a method developed 3% years ago by RN Elizabeth English, is now available at the Space-Age Therapy Centre in North Vancouver. With branches in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Mississauga, Ont., the centre offers smokers a chance to quit with often as little as one treatment. Allit takes is 15 to 20 minutes of treatment with a low-powered laser applied to the various points in the body, which English has determin- ed through her 30-year study of acupuncture. English, an RN for the past 40 years, has been an_ electrolysis specialist and pioneer in the development of soft laser therapy. Her method is similar to acupunc- ture, but involves no pain or use of heat. Also referred to as ‘‘cold laser,”” the method involves mixing helium and neon gases together to produce a light beam of high wavelength and low energy. When applied to specific trigger points, it stimulates the production of endorphins, natural pain suppressors produced by the body. The laser also increases the pro- duction of collagen, which aids in tissue repair. English spent a good deal of time developing her methods, which have been in use in Europe in various forms for the past 20 years. “I felt the need to help people stop smoking,’’ says English. English claims that her method works on 85 to 90 per cent of the smokers who take the treatment and can also be used by those who are trying to lose weight. The soft laser, which emits a red light, was initially developed by the Howard Hughes Corporation in 1962. English’s use of the laser does not puncture the skin. “It’s hygenic and painless,’’ she says. Horse Show: August 19-24 & August 29-Sept 5. Fea 3 ee tou ief from smoking habit The treatment involves 15 to 20 minutes of the stimulation of pre- determined points on the ear and arm. The cost is about $95. “It works out to be the cost of about four cartons of cigarettes,’’ says English. The Lonsdale office opened Aug. 8 and appeals to a mixed crowd. Clients have ranged in age from 15 to 65. ‘Many who come in have tried all methods to step smoking,” English adds. Darlene Miller, the owner of the new Lonsdale outlet, was treated by English two years ago in Win- nipeg to stop smoking: ‘‘! smoked a good package a day for 15 to 20 years. I tried nicorette gum and acupuncture but it didn’t work.” Said English: ‘‘This will do in five seconds what a needle will do in 15 minutes. We have doctors coming in here for treatments and doctors sending patients here for treatments.”” All centre operators are trained in Winnipeg for approximately one month.
