Wharf wins 20-year contract A NORTH Vancouver bulk loading facility has won a massive 20-year contract to unload ore concentrates from an Alaskan mine. Under the contract, Vancouver Wharves Lid. wil) untoad ap- proximately 400,000 tonnes of leud-zinc concentrates annually from Cominco Alaska Inc.'s Red Dog mine. The company plans to start shipping the concentrate from the mine in 1990. ’ Vancouver Whearves chief operating officer John Mackay said Thursday the contract was an important one for the company. He said it was also interesting for the Port of Vancouver because it is a contract for unloading. The port is primarily involved in ex- porting goods. Vancouver Wharves, which has been on the North Share for 29 yenrs, will invest what Mackay said was “a significant amount’ of money in bulk ship unloading equipment that will be the first of its kind in the port and will be capable of unloading 1,000 tonnes of concentrate per hour. _ The company currently handles approximately seven mifiion tonnes of bulk cargo annually, 850,000 tonnes of which is ore con- centrates. The balance is pulp and paper. Thief strikes ‘A CAT burglar is on the prow! in North Vancouver. North Vancouver RCMP are investigating two break, enter and theft incidents where premises were broken iata while the residents were asicep in bed. : A thief broke into a residence in the 300-block of East Sth Street some time between 12:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., Sunday. The intruder gained access through a rear window and took three purses. Police later recovered the empty purses. On the same day and during the same time period, a thief gained entry through an untocked patio door in the 200-block of East 4th ! Street and made off with a waltct, a set of car keys and a car. Police advise residents to secure all access points to a residence before going to sleep or leaving home. Cocaine charges _ dropped _A STAY of proceédings was entered Monday in North Vancouver provincial court in two narcotics charges laid against « 23-year-old North Vancouver man. : John Spencer Robinson was’ originally charged jointly with James Bradiey Lyach, 27, also of North Vancouver, with posses- Sion of cocaine for.the purpose of trafficking in connection with a ‘Dee. 21, 1987 drug seizure. ° + He was also charged jointly with Lynch and three other Lower "Maiitand men with conspiracy to traffic in cocaine following the ‘seizure in North Vancouver of half a pound of 85 per cent pure _cocaine.worth an estimated $180,000. Also charged were Wolfgang Isachsen, 24, and Steven Cooke, 29, both of Burnaby, and William Edward White, 29, of Van- ‘couver. Both charges against Robinson were dropped Monday. - The other four have been scheduled to appear in North Van- -couver provincial court again April 5 to fix a date for trial on the conspiracy to traffic charge. Two arrested for ski theft --FAST ACTION on the part of a skier who saw-thieves drive off with his skis resulted in the arrest of two Surrey men. The two, an 18-year-old maa and a 20-year-old man, are facing ‘Il charges of theft under $1,000 and possession of stolen property _after West Vancouver Police stopped their car 8:30 p.m. March 9 -at the bottom of the Cypress Bowl Road and recovered two pairs © of stolen skis. The owner of the skis had recorded the licence number of the car “after he observed the two removing the skis mounted in & snow ~ bank near the cafeteria. ‘The two will be making a first appearance in West Vancouver ’ provincial court April 18.
