THE THIRD annual Great Clam
Chowder Contest is set for July 26
and entries are being accepted until
July 14 for this fun-filled day of
culinary creativity.

Former participants will find the
rules changed this year, the clam
chowder of the day having to be
Boston-style as opposed to the
previous Manhattan-style.

“Last year the entrants felt
(Boston-style) was far more com-
plicated to make than Manhat-
tan,’’ said contest organizer Rete
McKay. Trying to create a perfect
Boston-style chowder will separate
the cooks from the chefs, McKay
explained, . .

Entrants have one hour to whip
up a batch of top-notch clam
chowder, which is to be judged on

the basis of flavor, consistency,
spices, aroma and color.

Costumes are the order of the
day; last year the North Shore
News team cooked up a storm
dressed as a group of molluscs,
competing with a great joviality.

An award will be handed out for
the contest’s best theme, costume
and decor. .

Eight ‘teams have entered so far
and McKay is expecting at least
one celebrity team to try for the ti-
tle. The News will again send its
team to this event.

Judges this year include chefs
fron: two North Vancouver hotels,
food writers and food industry
professionals, ‘‘We’ve got some
great judges this year.’’

Entry forms and further infor-
mation is available at all the North

Vancouver libraries and municipal
halls and the local community arts
council office.
