Ge sport . a , . . aed € ‘ Bil - Sunday, May 23, 1982 - North Shore News Living with the automobile Cycling safety a must IT COULD happen so easily. A carelessly opened driving age, cyclists must car door, a little too much speed, a momentary distraction is all it takes — suddenly you, the safe driver, have injured a cyclist. By NANCY CAMPBELL But this scenario can be prevented if both drivers and bike riders are safety conscious. It doesn’t take much time to learn a few simple precautions, and what better time to do it than during May - Canada's bicycle safety month. The present bicycle boom can make travelling more hazardous for motorists. Bicycles are crowding the streets when everyone knows they belong on the sidewalk, night? Wrong! The most im- portant thing to remember is bicycles have a legal right to the road, and they must obey all traffic rules too. For motorists it means they must yield to bicycles as they do all other traffic. Bikes can travel very quickly and their speed can never be underestimated. They should be passed wide and wisely, and a constant look- out kept for them since they are comparatively small and less visible. For cyclists, it assuming a _ responsible attitude towards traffic. Even though they may be much younger than the means and obey them. Their first responsibility is now the rules of the road -- to be visible. All bikes should have a rear reflector, and if used for night cycling should have a white front light and extra reflectors. Cyclists should try to wear bright clothing, particularly in bad weather. CAUGHT BETWEEN a rock and a hard bus, cyclist finds himself in danger along West Vancouver's Marine Drive. Treacherous curves mar scenic bike route to Horseshoe Bay. (Eric Eggertson photo) They should always ride on the right with the traffic flow. Intersections call for more caution — most ac- cidents occur in them. Safety measures include: *signalling turns slowing never passing on the nght *never riding in a motorist’s blind spot “stopping at all stop signs and red lights *turning left from the left lane or walking the bicycle across the crosswalk. When a child is the cyclist, parents must assume the responsibility of ensuring that safety skills are learned and bicycle is roadworthy and suitable. Common mistakes include buying a bicycle the child will “grow into.” A bicycle which is too big is difficult to handle and stop safely. Another mistake is assuming a child is_ safe because he rides only in the neighbourhood. Statistics show that most children’s bicycle accidents happen near home. Bicycles should also be constantly checked for wear and damage, particularly to brakes and tires. Children can learn to maintain their bikes, and there are several courses offered to show them how. And with sunny weather coming, everyone can have a safe summer as a result. and GR entertainment Re At the movies BROADWAY 707 West Broadway (874 1977) CAPITOL, 820 Gcranvillc Mall.
