C2 - Wednesday, June 2, 1982 - North Shore News DEALING WITH OBESITY CHICAGO — Stomach- staple surgery must be re- evaluated because the in- creasingly popular weight- loss procedure for obese patients has such a high failure rate, a Canadian surgeon says. Dr. Joel Freeman, chief of general surgery at Ottawa General Hospital, told the Society for Surgery of Ab- mentary Tract meeting that of the 120 patients he treated with stomach-staple surgery. only half were able to lose weight and keep it off. “This procedure ... has caught on much too quickly,” Freeman said in presenting his findings on Wednesday. “It's being done in community hospitals with as much confidence as ap pendectomy 1s done for ap pendicitis. It should still be regarded as cxpenmental “Women who go from 300 pounds might into a bikin will come back to your office kissing your feet and giving you plaques. In other cases, he said, the staples pull out and negate the surgery. Freeman said he has modi- fied the operation to include vertical staples running parallel to the side of the stomach and inserting a plastic ring around the open- ing at the bottom of the pouch to keep the opening from getting larger.
