On ‘thecond shot’ forget it

The perks from this job
may not be your Pouilly
Fuisse level, but they're a lot
less likely to excite the
pointing finger. One day, for
instance, a food importer on
Main Street, moved by some
fervour about tofu, sent
along a couple of packages
of a do-it-yourself brand
called “Chu’s”, unfamiliar to
me but proving very ac-
ceptable. A _ little more
refined than the real thing, a
vague sweetness, but equally
powerful. And neat.

Another time it was an
invitation to sample kiwi
fruit in various guises, along
with New Zealand wines. I'll
have the dope on that next
week, and whether, after all
thoshe winesh, they'll
consider lowering the price
of the fuzzy little delicacies.

One of the _ funniest
received was an enclosure in
a letter from a chap who
came to the class before the
class before the last. He'd
been back in Indiana visiting
his mother, and incidentally
showing off his expertise
with Chicken Cordon Bleu
and Nanaimo Bars. His mum

was so happy to see his
enthusiasms diverted from
the chicks and bars he'd
patronised before, that she
sent him the following recipe
to add to his collection.

Home gardeners should
not plant in their gardens
table potatoes bought at a
grocery store. Certified seed
potatoes must be used in-
stead. These are available at
most outlets which = sell
plants and garden supolies.

gardeners might be tempted
to use table potatoes
because of a shortage and
high prices of certified seed
potatoes in B.C. this year.
But, he warned, our table
potatoes, most of which are
grown in the commercial
potato-production areas of
Washington and_ Idaho,

with it myself, in fact I never
did complete it, but you may
have better luck. Or a
clearer head. Or a higher
threshold for rum. Here you
are

RUM CAKE
Before you start, measure
out the necessary rum and
sample for quality. Good,
isn't it?

Select a large mixing
bowl, measuring cup,
spatula and all that stuff.
Check the rum again. You
want to be sure, eh? Now,
with an electric beater beat
one cup of butter in a large
fluffy bowl. Add one
teashpoon shugar and beat
again. Add two large eggsh
and two cups of fried druit.
Beat until very high.

Shample the rum again.

Now shift in three cups
paking bowder, a punch of
rum, one seashpoon of toda,
one cup of pepper, uh,
maybe that should be shalt.

Check out the rum while
you deshide.

Next, shift in a half-pint of
lemon juice and fold in the
chopped buttermilk. Shtrain
the nuts and add. Make
shure they're right shide up.
Shample rum.

Now add one bableshpoon
srown bugar and mish well.
Greash and set cake pan at
350 degrees.

On thecond shot forget the
whole thing, shample the
rest of the rum and bo to
ged.
