for peace

| But Carter's not so sure

A jubilant Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat this
week told reporters that
negotiators were on the
threshold of signing a peacé
treaty with Israel.

But U.S: President Jimmy
Carter, whose initiative in
_Visiting the Middle-East has
rekindled the peace talks,
wasn't so hopeful.

He said there were still
several problem areas to be
overcome and a top U.S.
official announcéd that the
talks had previously been
more advagced at other
times without a signing
having taken place.

One of the main hurdles
facing Carter, who has taken

a desperate political make-
or-break gamble bys
reopening the treaty talks, is
that Israel will only agree to
peace on the terms worked
out in worked out in Prime
Minister Begin’s com-
promise with Carter last
week, while Egypt has in-
dicated the desire for further
amendments, chiefly
concerning Palestinians.

hero's welcome, with

him for his peace-making
efforts, even as opposition to
Egypt from Arab neighbors
