THERE WERE a lot of very interested people at Lonsdale Quay last week. Interested in business, in- terested in the old and the poor, interested in esthetics and in social responsibilities. - They were there at a forum organized by the City of North. - Vancouver to find a solution to our gateway problem: Lower Lonsdale. -- It won’t do, in its present ‘incarnation. It’s unfriendly; it’s ungracious; it offers no invitation to get past the front’ «door. . . Unless we resuscitate it in- telligently we'll be condemning it to grunge and antisocial ac- tivity and certain decay. ° Just for a minute, pretend you're a tourist, over at. Canada Place on a pretty summer’s day. You admire the ‘'» slopes of the mountains we) front. You can see the city’ 5 build- “ings, you learn there’s a cute: little'sea-bus available day and. eleanor THE VINTAGE YEARS “Q” ‘rotating they say there’s _a market full of what makes Canadians tick. ‘You enjoy the little sea voyage, the giant foreign freighters looming. The land- ing is indifferent but you - follow the crowd, to a great ‘lofty bus barn. Hmmmm. But some people veer right and there are some little shops, ” ~ presently a plaza, and ohfa ~, doorway! People a are ¢ going in there, so. you go too, This must be the place. And it’s lovely. Flowers, great piles of tomatoes and fruits, ice-cream cones avail- able, big squashy muffins, glistening fish, and over there people sit at tables, eating and loafing. You explore it all, and reach the flowers — stalls at the other end, where you turn around and head back to the SeaBus. That was nice, you say. But where’s the town? you say. Funny. Where should we have gone? You and I know. We also know it's an uphill push. But what if we made some beguil- ' ing signs that led to a neat pe- ’ destrian crossing over top of Esplanade? {t would lead past the Keg and then zig-zag up ‘the slope, giving panoramic views as one climbed. There'd be benches for puf- fers and grottos for exhibits and lots of shrubs and blooms and information panels, |) Visitors would eventually be led to Third Street and Lons:" tention, Lawyer Heidi Mason, head of the Lower Lonsdale Business Association, lives and works in the area, She : described wild nights of yelling — and screaming and drug deal-: ing in Waterfront Park. Break-ins are routine for area businesses, three to, four. times every year. ” The place needs people. “Byes at the street level’? are a. great deterrent to misbehavior. ° But in its présent state, af- fordable housing fer the el- © derly and the poor:doesn’t ex ist, nor does a supermarket that caters to those people 4 Peace and quiet and a place to park the car are everyone's... ~ requirements. ‘Theatres and.” meeting places that bring peo- ple after dark are vital to... keeping the area alive, as well | as enriching their lives. - 7 _. One longs to see how much * comes out of that fertile cole lection of minds.° : past all the interesting little shops. What if? And what if that original streetcar that BC Transit saved for us ran up as far as 15th, Street, with impromptu stops and talks? There city hall would be found in a lovely park space for open-air fun and games. And on the way downhill each of the six levels would be en- joyed as a terrace — view- ; points of our waterfront which have been denied to us from the start. Visitors like these were thick on the ground at that meeting. People like Phil Boname and Arnie Fullerton pointing out our multiple design advan- tages, imploring us to keep our history to make ourselves complete and credible. They got us ali excited. Others brought the downside - of further inaction to cur at- a night, and where you see the dale Avenue and then downhill at’s Happening.
