The 1960s have lett at least one important legacy, though: as with the Mission district, the Haight is a hotbed of politi- cal activism, perhaps more so now than in its heyday. Adjoining the Haight to the west, Golden Gate Park is a brilliant example of land reclamation gone right. Formerly a thousand acres of sand dunes, the park now contains various museums, un arboretum, and a conser- vatory, amongst other attrac- tions. Instead, we. paid our respects to the bust of Cervantes and explored the formal Japanese Tea Garden. We then walked through the arboretum, lux- uriating in foliage and flow- ers from around tute world. Everybody knows about the cable cars, and everybody wants to ride them. But how do they. work? Any large city has its share of attractions, and dis- tractions, for the cosmopoli- tan traveller. San Francisco is one of the very few North American cities | have visited that has a good sense of itself in history. This is not to say that it is stuck in the past, only that it takes account of its past while stepping into the future.
