With the death of T.K. (Ken) Campbell, Feb 12, in his West Vancouver home, the district also lost one of its links with the past. The executive vice-president of Woodward's when he retired 10 years ago, Campbell was born in Kerrisdale, but came to live in the district as a young boy, when his father, Tom Campbell, bought property. at 22nd Street and Mathers Avenue and became the first manager of the West Van- couver Ferry. «+ Educated in West Vancouver, T.K. started working as a stockroom boy at Woodward's in 1930. Five years later, as an assistant manager in the ladies wear department, Campbell met co- worker Pauline Evans, the daugh- ter of a prominent engineer (build- er of the original Georgia Viaduct) and granddaughter of architect his retirement parties, and the celebration of his many achieve- ments. Enoch Evans. They were married - in 1937. Improving his skills at nightschool business courses, Campbell became a Woodward's director in 1941, moving to Ed- monton as manager of Wood- ward’s Edmonton store in 1949. Some 28 years later, the lights on Jasper Avenue were kept shin- ing green so that Edmonton police could escort Campbell to one of . i a toe T.K. CAMPBELL ... retired Woodward's executive vice-pcesi- dent passes on. These included the building of seven stores and shopping centres in Alberta. Among them, the Ed- monton Centre project was an especial challenge in that it involv- ed two years of negotiations to secure the two square blocks of land necessary. A charter member of Grouse Mountain’s Skyline Ski Club, Campbeli was a skiing enthusiast. His interests also included golfing, boating, fishing, gardening, phi- losophy and writing poetry. He served for many years on the University Hospital Board and Exhibition Board in Edmonton, where he was also involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Y™M- CA, Boy Scouts, Aviation Hall of Fame and Canadian Red Cross. They were eventful years for Mrs. Campbell, too, as she became comfortable with entertaining sev- eral hundred people at social occa- sions. She remembers waiting for T.K. to get home late Christmas Eve, after a full day of touring the seven Woodward's stores and shaking the hand of every employee. .
