Curry house has Fijian edge

But Kumar is not in the

history business. She's not
interested, for example, in
being the tint West Vancouver
curry house to close up shop.

A recent Friday night visit
determined that Kumar's cate
deserves to avoid the latter
slice of history making.

Lata’s took up residence in
whar had been Barry
Hevden’s Trader's Cate, a
stock market-themed dining
adventure that was more bear
than bull.

Prior to Heyden, Rodney
and Chloe Kopman and their
Bellevue Cafe had taken a
swing at offering, West
Vancouverites an inforinal
South African-flavoured diner
at the Bellevue and 16th foca-
ticn.

Neither of Lata’s predeces-
sors lit up the Bellevue sky.

So Kumar has her work cut
out for her if she hopes ro win
any lasting loyalties from arca
diners.

And some loyalties have
already been forged. Consider
this endorsement from
renowned curry house dining
buff and West Vancouver bed
and breaksast mogul B.W.,

’ who writes Table Hopping

with word that Lata’s food “is
excellent, authentic and very
modestly priced.”

Her cafe is a pretty low-key

attair. Not a tot of high cnergy
ambience. Simple Canadian
cate decer with a tew Fijian
touches — bolts of brightly
coloured fabric hung trom the
ceiling; Indian music provid-
ing aural texture; Kumar han-
ding the 50-sear dining room;
chet Gunnit Singh in the
kitchen.

But ambience is not what
this room is about. PT.
Barnum would have a tough
time making it swing.

What matters here is what's
on the plate.

And Lata’s does a good job
where it counts.

Kumar, late of Surrey’s
Bombay Palace and
Coquitlam’s Bombay Grill,
presents a simple menu of
dishes bearing Indian, Fijian
and African influences.

Indian curries predominate:

Tandoori Chicken,
Vegetable Biryani, Lamb Karai
and a good variety of vegetari-
an dishes such as Palak Paneer

But Lara's also includes
some traditional Fijian dishes
such as Row Row, which com-

Liquid retreshment is limit-
ed. There’s only a couple of
house wines to choose from,
but Kumar stocks some good
beer. The Tiger lager from
Singapore is worth sampling.
Ir comes in the family-sized
.640-litre bowie and makes
excellent company tor Lata’s
spicy curry dishes.

Entrees are reasonably
priced. The vegetarian dishes
are all under $10; the only
item over SE) is the Shrimp
and Seafood alla Bombay at
$14.95.

And the dishes are well
made.

The sampled Butter
Chicken delivered a rich curry
sauce with a spicy edge. Lots

Without a tandoor oven,
Lara's naan and parantha are
pretty pedestrian, but they still
do a good jab of mopping up
the complex curry sauces.

Order lots of vogurt raita,
side dishes of peas pulva or
birvani (basmati rice) and
some homemade chutneys to
go with your main dishes.
They add much to the enjoy-
ment of the meal.

herself is relaxed. Do not
expect lickety-split delivery of
dishes.

This after all is Laca’s Place.
And J.ata rushes for no man.

As its name suggests, Lata’s
is an informal cafe, bute it adds
welcome spice to West
Vancouver's dining repertoire.
