Dave likes running in the
snow — you might have seen
him running through the
white stuff on local bus shelters
in an ad ‘for Grote Mountain,
where he works as.director of
adventure.

In fact, he bikes it it so much
that every Thursday night,
from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Dave —
last name Cressmian — leads a
group of enthusiastic Lycra-
wrapped fitness bufls as they
bound around on top of the

strapped onto their wainers.

These are the
Snowrunners: athletes incor-
porating the sessions as part of
their winter training; runners
secking a new challenge; and
regular fair-weather Grouse
Grinders szeking an equally
demanding winter workout.

They’ve. found it.

Each (week, Cressman
changes othe program.
Sometimes it’s Scottish miles
—in which the runners at the
back have to speed up to over-
take the front of the pack.

Last Thursday it was hill
repeats. The group began with

a 20-minute warm-up jog
through dark skies and softly
falling snow to the Snowshoe
Park. There, Cressman set his
watch at 15 minutes and the
runners sprinted, jogged or
trudged up and down a hill as
many times as they could with-
in the time limit.

“It’s a litde strange at first
getting used to running with
the snowshoes,” said
Cressman. :

“Sometimes people waste
energy picking their feet up
really high. The key is to throw
your feet forward. Once you
